Plasma Coating Process

Plasma spraying is used to apply ceramic, cermet and metallic coatings to provide one or more of the following attributes to the critical components in several industry sectors.
  • To provide wear and corrosion protection:   Seal ring grooves in the compressor area of the Aero-engines with Tungsten carbide/cobalt to resist fretting wear and corrosion.
  • To improve Thermal Insulation:   Zirconia based thermal protection coatings are used in turbine chamber.
  • To provide bio-compatibility:   Bio-compatible materials are plasma sprayed on medical implants.
In Plasma Spraying Process, the material to be deposited (feedstock) — typically in powder form or wire — is introduced into the plasma jet, emanating from a plasma torch. In the jet, where the temperature is on the order of 10,000 K, the material is melted and propelled towards a substrate. There, the molten droplets flatten, rapidly solidify and form a deposit.
